Dear Dr. Helland:
I received your mailer today and was so hurt that you would send out a mass
mailing like this to all the Mormons you can find. You don't even know me, nor
do you care about me. Why is it that all who are led astray feel guilty and
have to advertise it to all the world? You say, "I used to persuade people to
believe in the Book of Mormon, too." Well, obviously you have not even begun to
grasp it's meaning. You have searched falsely and now you are trying to get
others to follow you. I see this happen in the world today and I will have no
part of it. My testimony runs a lot deeper than that, and I know the Book of
Mormon is the word of God. I know for myself. It is not dependent upon anyone
else. Please stop trying to persuade people to believe as you do because I do
not think you care for them or their salvation.
Please read the Book of Mormon like it was meant to be read - with faith in
the Lord Jesus Christ. This is His word, Dr. Helland. You know it deep down
and I know it. Read it and then ask the Lord if it is true. Please don't try
to lead others astray. Do something useful with your time because right now you
are wasting it. No matter what or who tries to stop this work, it will roll
forward regardless of who is following. Go back to persuading people instead to
believe in it. You will find happiness and peace there - I promise.
I just had a little brother return from a mission last week and I saw for
myself the loving light in his eyes (the light of Christ). He has been a
servant of the Lord for the past two years, and I've never seen him more happy
in all my life. He was not always following the Lord. He had a drug problem,
which is so common for youth today. However, through the love and prayers our
family offered him and by reading the Book of Mormon with faith in the Lord
Jesus Christ, he was able to prepare for and be worthy to serve a mission. He
left when he was twenty instead of nineteen because he spent an entire year
preparing to preach the Lord's word - found in the Book of Mormon. The Lord
gave him another chance because of His Atonement for all mankind, and my brother
was able to serve Him. How grateful my little brother is for having this
opportunity and for the Lord's forgiveness. He loved his mission and his love
for the Book of Mormon and the Lord's message has grown immensely. I saw the
spiritual growth that had taken place in his heart and mind, and it was so
wonderful! Please don't take that away from people. The Lord is the light, the
life and the hope of the world, Dr. Helland. Teach what he taught, which is
what is found in the Book of Mormon.
I do not know you, but I'm
sure you are a good man. You have learned so much in your life, and you could
be such a powerful tool in the Lord's hands, but first you must teach His
truth. The Lord wants all his children to know His truth by reading the Book of
Mormon with faith in Him alone. His way is the only way that leads to happiness
in this life and eternal life in the world to come.
